FAQs
Is Aikido a real martial art?
Yes Aikido is a real martial art, it was invented from our founder Morihei Ueshiba in the late 1920s. Since then the art has evolved into the form it takes today, practiced by thousands of practitioners across the globe?
Why does Aikido look fake?
This is our most commonly asked question and the answer is relatively quite simple…..Ukemi. Ukemi is the art of defensive falling which allows us to train otherwise dangerous techniques safely. Let me ask you a question, how would you safely practice breaking someones arm without developing bad habits? In Aikido our students are taught to roll or fall safely out of techniques when they feel the right amount of force.
Can i use Aikido to defend myself on the street?
Short answer, yes. Aikido has many defence techniques and principles that can help defend from an assailant on the street. However some techniques take years to refine and apply. We don’t just teach techniques we teach prinicples and applications. No one encounter is the same so we show our students various ways to react to different types of aggressors.
Can i train if i have a preexisting injury?
Of course you can, we won’t turn you away if you have a injury. What we will do is find a way for you to train safely in a way that doesn’t affect your injury. We have had two students come in with a shoulder/knee injury respectively that slowly ended up recovering after a few years of training (though their own Physio played a big factor in that process.)
How long does it take to reach black belt?
On paper 5 years, but in principle whenever you are ready. It’s our job as Senseis to prepare and evaluate when. our students are ready to grade. In truth everyone is different, some might pick up techniques easier than others, but how you apply and understand it is a whole other element. The best way to reach black belt is to show up consistently every week and have a positive attitude to training.
Why is your dojo so hard to find?
Yup this one is a fun one to answer. Our dojo is located behind the Capalaba PCYC down past the BMX track. Our dojo is inside the Scout hall at the bottom of the BMX track. It can be tricky to find on your first go, but one of our Senseis can always meet you out front to show you the way down.
